Sumi.: I was just here???
I was just here??? is the debut album from Melbourne-based rapper, vocalist and producer Sumi. Built around real experiences and reflections on everyday life, the project explores themes of loss, nostalgia, love and heartbreak through a balance of warm live instrumentation and ethereal, atmospheric soundscapes. I was engaged to create the full visual rollout for the album, including artwork, typography, merchandise, music video title cards and promotional posters.
I led the project from concept development through to final delivery, beginning with moodboards exploring organic textures, abstract forms and soft gradients. A running figure motif became central to the visual identity, symbolising movement through time, one of the album’s key themes. Typography was developed through hand-drawn and manipulated type treatments, with printed and rescanned elements creating textures that felt tactile and imperfect.
The final identity gave the album a distinctive and cohesive visual presence across digital and physical formats. Merchandise sold strongly at the launch event, and the album reached over 90,000 streams within two months of release. The project successfully established a recognisable visual language for the artist, translating the emotional themes of the music into a design system that felt immersive, expressive and authentic.
