Destiny: A Zine Dedicated to my Parents
Destiny is a deeply personal B5 zine that weaves together the intimate narratives of my parents' journey from China to New Zealand. This project, part of my Capstone at RMIT University, is a heartfelt dedication to their love, choices, and resilience. Written, designed, printed, and hand-bound by me, Destiny combines personal stories with archival photographs, capturing the cultural significance of our family's heritage.
The creative process began with gathering content from old family archives, scanning images, and interviewing my parents. The zine features a handmade format, using saddle-stitched red thread, a motif symbolising connection throughout the book. The cover is crafted from textured paper sourced from a local Japanese paper store.
Visually, it blends nostalgia with modern design elements, offering readers a chronological journey from China to New Zealand. The dynamic layout includes old photographs, personal musings, stories, proverbs, and interviews, creating a rich tapestry of our family’s history.
Working on this project was a profound experience, allowing me to delve deeper into my heritage and embrace the aspects often hidden due to cultural assimilation. This zine not only honours my parents' sacrifices but also stands as a lifelong keepsake for our family, encapsulating their tales of love, loss, and change.
